This week’s guest on ABWilson’s Heart of the Matter podcast is Francoise Palau-Wolffe, a human rights educator, activist and founder of the Human Rights Education Network (HUREN).
Francoise’s journey began as a teenager, where a powerful encounter with the story of a former political prisoner supported by Amnesty International awakened her to the reality that even one young person can help change another’s life. Since then, she has woven her love of language, teaching and justice into a life devoted to advancing human dignity through education, from her early work with Amnesty to piloting school based programs and co-creating an “Intro to Human Rights” course with Bermuda College that helps people see human rights as present in their daily lives.
In this conversation, Francoise shares warm and insightful stories about speaking up in the face of injustice, mentoring young leaders and witnessing the power of one multiplied by millions when her students’ letters contributed to a prisoner’s release.
She reflects on the importance of stepping outside our comfort zones, finding courage in community and embracing rest as a quiet act of resistance in a performance driven world.
Along the way, Francoise opens a window into the joys that sustain her including her love of flamenco and the deep emotion of duende, her passion for thrillers and world literature, and the comfort she finds in family, art, nature and good food. This episode invites listeners to notice human rights all around them, trust the impact of small actions and imagine how their own voice might help build a more just and compassionate world.
